Custom Home Building in Western North Carolina
Arcadia Ridge Construction builds custom homes across Madison and Buncombe counties and the ridges that surround them. Every home we build begins the same way: standing on the land with you, watching where the light falls, where the wind comes from, and where the long view opens up. That walk shapes everything that follows — the orientation of the great room, the height of the porch, the placement of the drive, and the way the house sits into the grade instead of fighting it.
Founded in 2001 and backed by 35+ years of hands-on building experience, our work is deliberately limited in volume. John Finley is on site, not behind a desk, and the same small group of trusted framers, masons, timber specialists and finish carpenters returns project after project. That continuity is why the details hold up: tight reveals, true corners, level decks, water that goes where it should for decades.
We build in the register of luxury mountain modern — heavy timber and steel connections, native stone, deep eaves, walls of glass framed to capture a specific ridge line, and interiors that stay warm rather than austere. Whether you want a compact three-bedroom retreat above the French Broad or a full multi-level family home with a lower-level bunk suite and covered outdoor kitchen, the building method is the same and the standard does not move.
Building on Mountain Terrain
Western North Carolina lots are not flat suburban pads, and pretending otherwise is how budgets get broken. Steep slopes, rock, seasonal springs, narrow rights-of-way and long utility runs are normal here. We plan for them early. Before design work goes far, we evaluate access, soils, drainage, sun angles and the realistic buildable envelope, then price the site work honestly rather than burying it in allowances.
Access roads and driveways get engineered attention: grade, radius for concrete and lumber trucks, culverts, cuts, and surface material that will survive a wet winter and a hard freeze-thaw cycle. Foundations often mean stepped footings, engineered retaining walls, or piers into rock. On lots without municipal service we coordinate well siting and yield testing, septic evaluation and permitting with Madison or Buncombe County environmental health before you are committed to a floor plan the land cannot carry.
Mountain weather also drives detailing. We build assemblies that manage wind-driven rain and standing snow on north faces, use generous overhangs and properly flashed roof-to-wall transitions, insulate and air-seal for cold nights at elevation, and specify exterior finishes that hold up to intense summer UV followed by winter ice. It is unglamorous work that never shows in a photograph and is the entire reason a house still feels tight in year twenty.
Materials and Craftsmanship
Timber, stone and glass do the emotional work in a mountain home, so we source them carefully. Exposed trusses and beams, dry-stacked or mortared native stone at chimneys and columns, wide-plank floors, and large-format glazing with thermally broken frames. We detail cabinetry, stair work and built-ins with our finish carpenters rather than ordering a package and hoping it fits.
You will see the same care in what you cannot see: framing layouts that keep long spans quiet, blocking where future railings and fixtures land, mechanical runs coordinated before drywall, and conduit left for the lighting, audio or EV service you may want later. Lasting value is a construction decision, not a marketing line.

Questions
Custom Home Building FAQs
Most custom homes run 12 to 18 months of construction, with 2 to 6 months of design, permitting and site evaluation before that. Steep-lot site work, long driveways, well and septic permitting, and long-lead windows or specialty timber are the usual schedule drivers.
